Stargate SG-1 4.17 – Absolute Power

The coincidence virus at work again: last time, Stargate SG-1 used a location that had been used in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie. This time, the actor Yee Jee Tso, who had played one of the Doctor’s kind-of companions in that movie, has a small role. He’s in a couple of episodes of Stargate Atlantis as well. Another Who connection, this one a little more tenuous: like the disappointing third series finale, “Last of the Time Lords”, the story has a big time jump and the words “One Year Later” appear onscreen, which turns into a really big clue that we’re watching something that’s going to be reset before the end of the episode. Steven Williams’s character, General Vidrine, makes another brief appearance, but since it’s in the dream / alternate future, it doesn’t really count, does it?

Because this show has so many threads going, it’s been almost a year since the business of Apophis’s child has been mentioned. We met the baby in season three’s “Maternal Instincts”, where he was left in the care of one of the ascended beings, Oma Desala. So it’s not like this story was screaming out to be told; you tell me a kid gets turned into glowing energy on a different plane of existence, I’m not losing sleep over him showing up again. But I guess, apart from doing something a little different and letting the actors stretch their legs with another alternate future tale, this does remind us that the ascended beings are out there. They’ll become important in time.
